What is BOTOX® Cosmetic used for?

Crow’s feet, worry lines and laugh lines can all be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

As a result of dynamic contractions associated with the facial muscles that help create our various facial expressions, the overlying skin may develop deep lines that are hard to conceal – even at rest. Cosmetic BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are designed to temporarily remove the nerve endings of specific muscles that are treated. By cutting off the “wiring” to the offending tiny muscles, the dynamic facial wrinkles (expression lines), are softened and frequently eliminated.

What is the procedure?

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are performed without any need for anesthesia because they are virtually painless. A very small gauge needle has been specially designed to insure that only a slight sensation is felt when the injections are made.

After careful consultation with the doctors, a specific plan for injections is made. The areas to be injected are sometimes imaged so that the patient can observe the before and after affects. Some patients benefit from limited areas, such as between the eyes or across the forehead, others are treated in multiple areas. The entire procedure takes only minutes. You can go back to your normal routine afterwards. The doctors will also advise you if you need to keep your head upright for a few hours after the BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.

What can I expect?

Most people achieve results from their injections within hours. By three to five days the peak results are evident. Occasionally there is a minute amount of redness or even bruising around an injection site. In rare instances there may a temporary weakness in one of the upper eyelids.

Sometimes, repeat injections are advisable after 2 to 3 weeks if an area is not fully responding. Also, since the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic on the muscle nerve endings is reversible over time, patients will often choose to re-inject at 5 to 8 month intervals. Research has suggested however, that long term use of the injections leads to a longer duration of effect. It is also possible that patients learn to relax muscles that had previously been overactive.

Are there any limitations?

With advanced age and the amount of skin laxity, dramatic results may be limited. Adjunctive procedures may also be advised for facial rejuvenation such as laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion, or facial peels.

Lastly, there are certain contraindications to injections such as interference with aminoglycoside antibiotics. The doctors will review your medical history and alert you if there are any concerns or limitations for treatment.
